It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Osborne ‘Buddy’ Burke Sr., on Nov. 8, 2009, at Buchanan Memorial Health Centre, Neils Harbour, N.S.
Born Nov. 15, 1923, in New Victoria, N.S., he was the son of the late Joseph and Ethel (Tighe) Burke.
In his younger years Osborne ‘Buddy’ was active in boxing and was declared the Maritime provinces bantamweight champ after defeating the British navy champ in Halifax, N.S. His most notable fight was at the Strand Theatre in New Waterford during 1942. His match against Kid Harrison was scheduled for three, three-minute rounds. The crowded arena was treated to a piece of boxing history when Buddy knocked Kid Harrison out in five seconds. The fight, over in 15 seconds (10 count), was quite possibly the fastest recorded knockout at that time. Buddy was very proud of this accomplishment and was always willing to share the story with a new acquaintance.
He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War and throughout his life he worked as a miner, construction worker and fisherman.
Osborne (Buddy) is survived by his children, Johnny (Sandra) Wilson, New Waterford, N.S., Osborne (Kim), Ingonish, N.S., Fraser, Edmonton, Alta., Danny (Brittany), Sydney Forks, N.S., Roberta (Clarie), Hamilton, Ont., Carolyn, Halifax, N.S. He is also survived by his brothers, Patrick (Sonny), Hamilton, Ont., and Danny, New Waterford, N.S.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Adeline, Nancy, Bertha (Sis), Theresa (Bea) and brothers, Mickey, Earl and Joe Jr.
The family would like to thank Dr. Annie Law, Dr. Bernie Buffet and the nurses and staff of Buchanan Memorial Health Centre for all their wonderful care and support.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
