Anne Katherine MacKinnon, age 88, of Green Meadows Nursing Home, North Grant, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Lismore, Pictou County to William Charles and Margaret Mary (MacDonald) MacKinnon, Anne was a respected educator and gardener. Anne was always a high energy person who loved being outdoors. She loved the earth, the trees and animals. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in schools in Antigonish, Pictou County and Halifax. After retiring from teaching in Halifax, Anne returned to her home in Lismore where she felt the most comfortable. She spent many, many hours in her flower gardens. This is where Anne was her happiest getting her hands dirty and seeing things grow. She was a very knowledgeable gardener.
She is survived by a brother, Raymond, New Glasgow. Anne was dearly loved by her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by sister, Marie (Hardwick) and two sisters in infancy; brothers, Rev. Gus MacKinnon, O.M.I. and Charles MacKinnon.
Anne was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Lismore. She was also a very active member of her community having served as Secretary of the Lismore and District Community Association, Secretary of St. Mary’s Parish Council and Secretary of St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was for many years Religious Coordinator and Teacher at St. Mary’s Church. She was also involved in Gaelic classes. Anne loved family gatherings and would drop whatever she was doing to spend time with family and food.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lismore with Rev. Colin MacKinnon and Rev. Anthony MacDonald officiating.
