It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Thomas Gerard (Jerry) Marsh of Thompson Street, New Waterford, which occurred Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, after a very short illness.
Born and raised in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas Marsh and Kate (Andrews) Marsh.
Jerry was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford.
Jerry was an excellent baseball, hockey and rugby player during his school days and was very sports-minded and was instrumental in ensuring New Waterford had a rink and baseball and soccer fields.
Jerry began his career as a machinist with the mines and then taught the Millwright Trade at University College of Cape Breton and the Sydney Vocational School. He served his community for many years first starting as a councillor and then as the longest serving mayor of New Waterford. Throughout his political career he served on many boards and associations to help his community.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Georgina (LeDrew); his children, Donna Marsh, Stephen Marsh (Anne Marie), Cheryl Wootton (Brian), Barbie Burke (Paul); brothers, Bill (Sadie) and Karl. Jerry was blessed and loved by five beautiful grandchildren who he loved dearly including Ashley Livingston, Robert Marsh, Shauna Marsh, Brendan Wootton and Saralyn Burke.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eileen McIsaac and Stella Muise.
Visitation for the late Jerry Marsh will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral mass celebrating Jerry’s life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel, New Waterford, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating Interment will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery and a reception will be held immediately following at the KOC Hall, 3226 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, and all are welcomed to attend.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the kindness shown to Jerry and his family during his short battle with cancer.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation’s new cancer unit.
