It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David Lloyd Balah, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather and uncle on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital. Lloyd joins his beloved wife of 58 years, Wilma, in heaven’s embrace.
Born and raised in North Sydney, Lloyd was the son of the late David and Marguerite (Hatcher) Balah.
In his youth, Lloyd spent many happy years fishing with his father along the banks of the Margaree River. Lloyd studied for a short time at St. Mary’s Boys School in Halifax, before returning to North Sydney and running a business with his father. In later years, Lloyd settled into a happy family life with his wife Wilma and their nine children. He was also instrumental in the lives of many Northside youth who visited the arcade he owned and operated. Lloyd was also a devout member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. He was also an original founding member of the Father William Kiely Council of the Knights of Columbus in North Sydney and served for 58 years. Lloyd was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Lloyd was a wonderful father, whose happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, in cheerful chaos. His profound love of music, which he studied as a youth with his Uncle Moses Balah, was always present in his home. This appreciation of the arts is a legacy he has left to four generations of family. A creative man, Lloyd found great joy in writing, carrying a notebook for when inspiration struck. He was especially fulfilled by the preparation of his book “Stories Of A River.” The book was truly a labour of love, completed with his editor and partner, Wilma at his side. Lloyd enjoyed quiet time with Wilma, going for walks with his faithful companion Mr. Buttons and spending time with his devoted son Lloydie. He enjoyed frequent visits from family and friends. His devotion and care for his wife Wilma served as a testament to the depth of their love.
Lloyd is survived by his nine children, daughters, Theresa (Alan) MacLeod, Sydney, Cathy (Daniel Fraser), Alder Point, Rosanne (Mike) Speckert, Helen (Joe) Felstein, both of Newmarket, Ont., Noreen (Steven Stewart), Alymer, Que.; sons, David (Nancy), Sydney Mines, Martin (Kathy), St. Catharines, Gerard (Patricia), Newmarket and Lloyd, at home. Also surviving are his 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Wilma (Gillis) Balah on Nov. 12, 2011, and his two sisters, Helen Dunn and Agnes Westhaver, an infant brother, Habib and infant grandson, Jacob Christopher Felstein.
Visitation for Lloyd will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Joseph Gillis officiating. Burial to take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
