Mary Jessie Coady died peacefully at home on Dec. 18, 2011, after months of devoted care by her loving family. She was in her 91st year.
Mary Jessie was born on Scotch Hill, Margaree Harbour on April 14, 1921, to parents Jessie McDaniel and James MacNeil. She grew up on the family farm with her sister, Catherine, and brothers Malcolm Hugh John (died in childhood), Samuel, James and Hugh John. She was the last of her siblings.
Mary Jessie was a teacher, having graduated from Normal School in Truro. Following her training, she returned to Cape Breton where she taught in several communities in Inverness County. In 1949 she married Leo Coady, who predeceased her in 1991 after 42 years of marriage. Together they raised 13 children, including four sets of twins. Her devoted children are Kevin, Anita, Adrian, Maria, Moira, Maureen, Marilyn, Michael, Margaret, Moses, Natalie, Francis and Cathy. She also enjoyed the affection of her 26 grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, daughters-in-law and sons-in-law.
Mary Jessie was a spiritual woman and her life was guided by her Catholic faith and her membership at St. Joseph’s Parish, S.W. Margaree. She was extremely hospitable and welcomed friends and strangers alike into her home and to her table. She was known for her mental clarity, political acumen and brilliant memory. Mary Jessie was a woman who cherished the moment. A light has gone out of our lives.
Visitation will be in St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, North East Margaree, Thursday, Dec. 22, from 2-8 p.m., with vigil prayers to follow. Funeral will be in St. Joseph’s Parish, South West Margaree, Friday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m., with burial to follow in South West Margaree Parish Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services. Donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society. Family flowers only.
