It is with sadness that the family of the late Lorway Richard Collins age 91, of Amherst announce his passing on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS. We rejoice for him that he will be celebrating Christmas with Jesus this year.
Born in Spencer's Island, NS he was a son of the late John and Edna (Morris) Collins.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Lorway was employed for many years with the Department of Highways as well as working in the woods and in sawmills in Cumberland County.
He retired as a commissionaire at Fort Beausejour in New Brunswick.
Lorway was a member of Crossroads Gospel Temple, Amherst where he served on the Board for many years.
He was an avid bowler and continued to enjoy his regular schedule of bowling three times a week right up until the end of July. He was well known for attempting to recruit everyone he met to join him. Even in failing health Lorway still enjoyed numerous opportunities to indulge his passion, even as recently as December 2nd.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Shirley (Allen) Collins, two sons Richard (Wavey) of Fort McMurray, AB and Rev. David (Bessie) of Sparwood, BC, two daughters Nancy (Clarence) White of Deer Lake, NL and Nellie (Rodney) Anderson of Amherst; seven grandchildren Steven and Gregory Collins, Loriley and Murray White, Shelby-Lynn and Mark Collins and Lydia Anderson and one great grandson Wyatt Collins. Lorway is also survived by Conrad Carde who was like a son to him.
Besides his parents, Lorway was predeceased by brothers, Willis, Alden, Kenneth and Leonard and sister, Gretchen Johnston and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 p.m. in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS (667-9906)
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. from Crossroads Gospel Temple, 155 Church St., Amherst with Rev. Jeff Goodwin officiating.
Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
