Bernice Grant
GRANT, M. BERNICE - It is great sadness the family announces the death of M. Bernice Grant nee Messer on Thursday, December 29, 2011, age 99, at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, NB. Bernice was the wife of the late Audbur R. Grant of Canterbury, NB. Born in Harvey, NB on December 7, 1912, she was the daughter of the late William and Francis (Wilson) Messer. Bernice and Audbur lived on the Family farm near Canterbury for 60 years after which she lived with her son Wayne in Woodstock, NB. In 2006 she moved to the Central Carleton Nursing Home Hartland, NB.
Bernice is survived by six children; Guilford Grant (Elaine), Kentville, NS, Sylvia Sinclair (John); Lois Flynn (Carl), and Carol Ford, all from Fredericton, NB, Gail Hallett (Lorne), Victoria Corner, NB, Wayne Grant, Woodstock, NB, Eleven grandchildren; Stephen Grant, Judy Young, John Sinclair Jr., Grant Sinclair, Jennifer Ball, Brent Flynn, Sheryl Matchett, Jamie Ford , Justin Ford, Jeffrey Hallett, Melissa Docherty, twenty great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband of 59 years and her parents; Bernice was predeceased by her brother; Edwin (Bessie) Messer, Harvey, NB and a sister; Bertha (Johnny) Piercy, McAdam, NB. Bernice graduated from the Fredericton Normal School in 1931 and taught school in the Canterbury area until her retirement in 1978 from the Canterbury High School. Bernice was a long time active member of the Saint Mark’s United Church in Canterbury, a member and past president of the Canterbury Seniors Country club and a member of the Woodstock Saint Andrews United Church Women and the Woodstock Seniors group. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Aside from her devotion and love to her six children and their offspring, Bernice loved to travel and took many trips by car, bus, train; plane and at the age of 84 went on a cruise to the Caribbean. She also loved to do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, scrabble, quilting, sewing and was for ever putting on meals for many visitors from far and near.
Visitation will be held at The Carleton Funeral Home 337 Lockhart Mill Road Jacksonville on Saturday, December 31 from 2 to 5. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2012 from The Carleton Funeral Home Chapel at 2 PM with Rev. Greg Williams officiating. Interment will be in the Canterbury Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a memorial of the donor’s choice.
