It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Irma Mary (Copan) Burke, 86, of Victoria Mines, on Jan. 3, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Joggins, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Gus and Elsa (Jacobi) Copan.
Irma was a member of the former St. Alphonsus Parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. She loved feeding the seagulls at Ryan’s Rock in Victoria Mines. Next to her family, her yard was her pride and joy. Irma spent several hours doing yard work and picking dandelions.
Surviving are daughters, Domatilia (Joseph) Beaton, New Waterford, Willena (Leo) Long, Scotchtown, Lythia (Jay) Kearney, Victoria Mines; sons, Jo-Gus (Sandra), Victoria Mines, Winston (Angie), Mira; brother, Albert Copan (Sally), Scotchtown; brother-in-law, Sonny Burke (Gloria), Hamilton, Ont. She was Grandma to Tammy, Frankie, David, Joey, Daryl, Timmy, Kenneth, David, Robbie, Dan, Terri Lynn, Chris, Kory, Kyle, Holly, Heidi, Caitlin, Nicholas, Cody; 14 great-grandchildren.
Irma was predeceased by her husband, Joseph E. Burke, brothers, Louie, Copie, Raymond, sisters, Madeline and Eleanor.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass of celebration for Irma will be held Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
