It is with deep sadness that we the family announce Isobel Vassallo passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Victoria (Gawenda) Kowalczyk.
Mom volunteered for the diabetes, heart and stroke and cancer societies and worked tirelessly for the Sydney Forks Rec Center until health problems prevented her from continuing.
Mom was a fun-loving and giving person who loved playing cards and games of all sorts.
Isobel is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Herb) Tucker, Blackett’s Lake, Marlene (Edward) Ginter, Sydney Forks, Rose Ramdass, Alberta, June (Paul) De Losh, Ontario, Laurie (Jim) Binns, Sydney; sons, Terrance (Kristal), Sydney Forks, Todd (Eleanor), New Glasgow, and Richard (Carrie), Terance Bay; sisters, Stella Cameron, North Sydney, Vicki O’Hagan, Ontario, Jennie (Levi) Horne, Sydney Forks, Cecilia (Hugh) MacInnis, Frenchvale; and brothers, John (Joan) Kowalczyk, Sydney Forks, and John J. MacLean, Sydney Forks. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Isobel was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, sons, Stanley, and Joseph, brother, Joseph, and sisters, Mary, Florence, Rose, and Sophie.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request of the family. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment to take place at Forest Haven Cemetery, Grand Lake Road.
