ERVIN FREDERICK BAUER
January 8, 1922 – November 20, 2009
Ervin was born at home located at Section 24 Township 36 Range 20 West 3rd (near Handel, SK), the 7th of 10 children. At age 15, his family moved to the Loon River area near Meadow Lake. On September 6, 1941, he married Myrtle Viola Gehl and they recently celebrated their 68th anniversary. He enlisted and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (Canadian Army) in 1942, and was stationed in various locations across Canada and England. Following his tour of duty in 1946, he entered the retail store business and soon after began a 33 year career with the Co-op managing stores in Makwa, Paynton, Meadow Lake, Prince Albert and Winnipeg. Following retirement, he served as a business consultant for Deloitte and Touche and the Federal Business Development Bank. In addition to his passion for business he was very involved in all the communities in which he lived. Some of these activities included serving on Meadow Lake Town Council and Prince Albert City Council, Meadow Lake and Prince Albert Credit Unions, Good Shepard and Messiah Lutheran Churches, and with organizations including Saskatchewan and Prince Albert Chambers of Commerce, Prince Albert Winter Festival, Canadian Cancer Society, Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre, Saskatchewan Arthritis Society, Pine Industries, Rotary Club, Cosmopolitan Club, Heart & Stroke Foundation, United Appeal and Saskatchewan Senior Games Board. He also served on the Federated Co-op Executive Management Committee and numerous industrial relations committees. During his time as General Manager of Prince Albert Co-op, he was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for providing jobs for underprivileged people. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his good nature, positive attitude, leadership skills, exceptional work ethic and genuine interest in people - especially children. Ervin enjoyed spending time in vacation homes at Emma Lake and Mesa as well as golfing, curling, and happy hours. He is survived by his loving wife Myrtle; children Dwayne and Jacquie Bauer, Gary and Joan Bauer, Cheryl Bauer Hyde and Wayne Hyde, Murray and Bonnie Bauer; grandchildren Laura Leah and Jeff English, Michelle and Jason Smart, Jameson Bauer Hyde and his girlfriend Breanne Cuddington; great-grandchildren Jonathan and Delaney Smart and Ethan Bauer English; brothers Edward (Ella) and Wilbur (Alma); sister Margaret Zarchekoff; sisters-in-law Thelma Bauer and Anne Hamp Gehl, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson Craig Bauer; parents Wolfgang George and Theresa (nee Bader) Bauer; siblings and their spouses Agnes and Lawrence Kaufman, John and Mavis Bauer, William Bauer, Robert and Frances Bauer, Grace and Tom Cowan, Joseph Bauer, Al Zarchekoff, and Myrtle’s family: Philip and Ella Gehl, Gordon and Sadie Gehl, Art and Lyda Gehl, Gerald Gehl. Special thanks to Dr. Smith-Windsor, Pastor Dennis Serfas and the staff at the Victoria Union Hospital in the emergency department and levels 5 and 6 for their extraordinary care, kindness and compassion for Ervin and the family over the past couple of weeks. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Dan Haugen officiating. Interment of cremated remains to follow at a later date. Officers and members of the Royal Canadian Legion will confer veterans honours. Memorial donations may
