The Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame regret to announce the sudden passing of Sr. Lorraine MacKinnon at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009.
Sr. Lorraine was the daughter of Annie Mae (MacIntosh) and the late Joseph R. MacKinnon of Sydney Mines.
She was a professed religious for 52 years. During those years she taught in Quebec, Summerside, P.E.I., Pictou and Truro, N.S.
Upon retirement from teaching she began the ministry of parish assistant at St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines, where she was actively engaged until the time of her death.
Sr. Lorraine is survived by her mother, Annie Mae; a sister, Shirley, Whitby, Ont.; a beloved uncle, John, B.C.; a dear sister-in-law, Elva, Sydney Mines; nephews, Charles Joseph, Aaron, Alexander, John Charles; a niece, Joanne; and several cousins who were very dear to her.
She was predeceased by her father, Joseph R., and her brother, Joseph.
Visitation for Sr. Lorraine will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:15 p.m. The mass to celebrate Sister’s life will take place in Friday, 2 p.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John, Fr. Agit, Fr. J.J. MacDonald and former pastors of St. Pius X parish concelebrating. A reception will follow in St. Pius X parish hall. The burial will be in the parish cemetery.
