We the family, regret to announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Angus A. MacDonald of King’s Road, Dominion. Dad passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at the Glace Bay Hospital. He was a resident, for the past two months, of Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Allan ‘Borehole’ and Florence (MacIntyre) MacDonald.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Angus was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Bridgeport. Angus served overseas in the Second World War with the Canadian Armed Forces in England, France, Holland, Italy and Germany. Angus was a member of the Branch 3 Royal Canadian Legion. Upon returning from overseas, Angus attended St. Francis Xavier University obtaining a bachelor of arts degree in 1951, a bachelor of education degree in 1952 and a master of arts degree in 1963. Angus began his teaching career in Dominion at Macdonald High School. In 1953 he accepted the principalship of St. Joseph’s School in Reserve Mines. Angus moved to the new Reserve District High School in 1965. After a distinguished 30-year career in educational administration, Angus retired in 1983.
Angus was an active member of Immaculate Conception parish where he served as lector, member of parish council, men’s club and in later years, St. Vincent de Paul.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Marguerite ‘Dolly’ (nee, Campbell); daughters, Phraz (Gerry) Doucet, Edson, Alta., Colette (Glen Stockmal), Calgary, Alta., Marguerite (Kenny) LeBlanc, Dominion, Mary (Tony) O’Brien, Dominion; sons, Allan (Cheryl) Sherwood Park, Alta., Campbell, Dominion, Angus (Karen), Dominion, Jamie (Michelle), Dominion; cherished grandchildren, Gillies (Michelle Power) and Nicole MacDonald, Courtney (Robbie Burrows), Tyrel, Jacenta and Kirsten LeBlanc, Jonathan, Kathleen and Rachel MacDonald, David and Elizabeth Stockmal, Michael, Joshua and Andrew O’Brien, Katie MacDonald, Gina MacDonald and great-granddaughter, Alexandria MacDonald. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Florence MacDonald and Doris MacDonal; brothers-in-law, Jack (Rita) Campbell and Ray (Alice) Campbell and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his sisters, Tina MacDonald, Rachel (Charles) MacIntyre, brothers, Neil, Jim ‘The Barber’ and Donald, sisters-in-law, Ethel (Hector) MacPherson, Grace (Bill) Furey. Mame (Steve) Cameron, Nellie (Bo) Haley, Kathleen (Danny) O’Neill and brothers-in-law, Bill (Norma) Campbell, Ted (Flo) Campbell and Gregory Campbell.
Visitation for the late Angus A. MacDonald will be held Friday, Nov. 27 and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28 at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Angus\' memory may be made to a charity of choice.
