It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edwin MacDonald, age 74, of Mira Gut and formerly of Glace Bay. Edwin passed on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Although born in Glace Bay, Edwin's heart and soul was always “Out on the Mira”. Every summer of his life, including his last, were spent with family and dear friends, overlooking the ocean in Mira Gut. Edwin was the son of the late Donald John and Ruth (MacLellan) MacDonald. He lived and worked in his early years in Scarborough, Ont. He returned to Glace Bay and was employed at Devco starting out as a machinist and at the time of his retirement, was holding a supervisory position. He was a member of the Glace Bay Kinsmen & K-40 Club. He was on the executive board of the Royal Canadian Legion, #3 John Bernard Croak, V.C. He was a member of the Cape Breton Legionnaires Choir. He enjoyed bowling, and dancing. Edwin was very involved in Newsom United Church, was a church elder, and especially enjoyed being a member of the choir.
Edwin will be sadly missed by son, Edwin (Jerry) MacDonald Jr., Halifax; stepdaughters, Diana (Gerry) MacKinnon-Furlong, Mira Bay, Carloyn (Bill) Snow, Sydney, stepsons, Jimmy MacKinnon, Manitoba, Billy (Bev) MacKinnon, Edmonton; brothers, Fred (Pat), Roger (Sandra), Ian (Donna), Donald (Hazel), Gary (Liz); sisters, Marilyn Bajour, Gwen Turner (Lester), Velda Cook; cherished grandsons, Jamie, Dale, Mackenzie; granddaughters, Joanne, Rebekah, Angela, Alyssa, Rita and several great -grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rita (Brown); brothers, Lorne (Ruby), David (Iowna) and sister, Athalie.
Visitation for Edwin MacDonald will be held Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Michael Goodfellow officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Donations in Edwin's memory may be made to Palliative Care, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Newsom United Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.
