Hazel Amy Light
The death of our mother, Hazel Amy Light, 88, occured on January 10, 2012, at Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, NS. Mom, and her twin brother, Ray, were born at home on May 9, 1923, in Onslow Mountain, Nova Scotia. Mom was the only daughter of the late Harry & Ella (Webb) Maberry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. After marrying in 1947, Mom and Dad rebuilt a house on the floodplains of Upper Onslow, subsequently moving to their beloved farm in East Mines (outside of Debert) in 1964 where they were known for goats, cattle, and children. With a kitchen table that pulled out to over 16 feet, it overflowed with kids, homemade food and the love of the Lord. Mom swore that goats' milk cured everything from eczema to the croup. They were famous for their house parties filled with music, great food, and hospitality. Mom and Dad met at church when Dad was stationed in Debert during World War II. From 1947, their church home was the Truro Alliance Church which eventually ended up on Phillip Street. Their faith and steadfastness for the Lord were evident all of their days. Mom played piano, organ, accordion, and even a set of musical glasses once. She often accompanied Dad's musical saw. Parent associations that she was involved with included Home & School, Girl Guides, Truro Bagpipe Band, and Sunday School. For a short period, she worked for Children's Aid & Family Services. Mom and Dad were also foster parents for many years. She started a long-running Christmas Club and she could master almost any craft that took her fancy. In spite of deteriorating eyesight from macular degeneration, her latest favourite activities were card-making and scrap-booking. She could always be relied upon to share a story, laughter and she made friends easily wherever she found herself as her love of life and fun was contagious. She was blessed with a great imagination and knew how to make do with minimal materials. Mom loved her home and family, old things, parties, and Christmas. She was very happy to have had one last Christmas together with her family. Geneology was a passion and her proudest achievement was becoming a member of both the United Empire Loyalists and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by sons: Carmel George (Hannah), Surrey, BC, & Glendon Ray (Paola Ridolfi), Montreal, PQ; daughters: Lesa Dawn (Wayne Gillies), Truro, & Vicki Jill, Edmonton, AB; grandchildren, Lily, Richard, Ella-Mae, Margaret & Pamela Light, Matthew & Shannon Mason, Micah & Cilicia Maskell; adorable great grandsons, Tyler & Gabriel Mason and their mother, Brittany Power; and special sons, Ricky (Aziza) Livingston, Toronto, & Clifford (Johna) Tomlinson, Truro. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by our Dad, Richard "Dick" Light, twin brother, Ray, older brother, George, and a great grandson, Bryce. Thanks to her favourite Drs Brown and McKenney; the palliative team; and friends Ruth, Sheila, Carol, Miriam, & Vera; and the VON. Donations may be made to the Truro Alliance Church Building Fund, the Colchester Stroke Club, or a charity of your choice. Visitation will take place on Monday, Jan. 16 from 7-9pm with the funeral service at 2pm Tuesday, January 17 at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, NS, with burial in Middle Road Cemetery, Debert, at a later date.
