Ernest William Hoban, of Tower Heights, Sydney, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Fred and Edna (Burt) Hoban.
For over 40 years, Ernie was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant, where he worked in the scrap yard. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. He loved playing music and spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. An avid sportsman, Ernie enjoyed boxing, darts, curling and hydro-boat racing in his earlier years. He always thoroughly enjoyed breeding and training his prize beagles. Time spent at his cottage and boating on the Mira, with family and friends, were what Ernie looked forward to every summer. Anyone who knew ‘Big E’, knows, he enjoyed “Happy Hour”, with his extended family, at the Steel City.
Surviving are his daughter, Judith Anne (Barry) MacKeigan, Sydney; sons, Gary Kenzie, Sydney and Ernest Kelly (Allison), Mira; grandchildren, Michael Hoban, Brittany and Bailey MacKeigan, Brandon and Taylor Hoban.
Ernie was predeceased by his wife, Muriel (Gallant); sister, Jean Quinlan; brother, Douglas Hoban; and granddaughter, Jamie Lee Hoban, daughter of Gary and Mary Ann.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Monday 2 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating.
