September 18, 1913 - October 2, 2006 On Monday, October 2, 2006, Mr. Archie Campbell passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years. Dad was being ably cared for by his granddaugher Debbie and her husband Dale, at their residence in Kamloops, B.C. He is survived by his son Don (Maggie) Campbell of Kamloops, his sister Christina Gregory of Kelowna; his grandchildren Debbie (Dale) Friesen, James (Carmen) Carr, Anita White, Neil Campbell and Bruce Campbell, all of Kamloops; his great-grandchildren Michael, Nicholas, Benjamin, Brittany, Brandon, Breanna; his great-grandson Gavin and numerous nephews and nieces. Dad was predeceased by his wife Jean (1989), daughter Sylvia (2000), sister Phemie, brothers William, Alister, John and Donald. Dad was born in Raymore, Saskatchewan. His father worked for the C.N. Railway as the family made their way across Canada after emigrating from Scotland. Dad started work for Kamloops Motor Company Ltd. in 1929 as driver/mechanics assistant. He and Jean married in 1936 and started their family. Volunteering in 1940, he served overseas in the Canadian Army Forestry Corps until 1945. Upon returning home after the war he rejoined the Kamloops Fire Department as a Volunteer Firefighter serving the City of Kamloops for a total of 28 years. It was at this time he started Taxi Service, he also started the first district ambulance as well as forming the first municipal bus service. In 1951 he commenced employment with the Provincial Department of Highways, working in Kamloops, Allison Pass and Merritt, retiring in 1978 as the Highways Garage Foreman in Merritt. Dad enjoyed the fact he was able to collect his pension for a longer period of time that it took him to earn it. Mom and Dad chose to remain in Merritt, they enjoyed the community and the friends they made after moving there and the great fishing added to their enjoyment in retirement. Dad enjoyed being with his close friend Chico, hunting and fishing and going for coffee where they would retell their stories and discuss and resolve world problems. ,A large part of Mom and Dads life was their cottage at Niskonlith Lake. They started building theirgetaway in the early 1950s. There were many parties, barbecues and corn roasts to enjoy with family, friends and strangers. With Dads ready smile and sense of humor he formed many friendships that have lasted to this day. Dad was often called the Mayor of Niskonlith Lake. When people needed assistance or that special tool or a broken or missing part they would stop at the cabin and more often than not Dad was able to provide a fix to get them by. It was at Niskonlith Lake that the strong, long term friendship with Tom and Helen Van Dyke was formed which has lasted through these many years. Dad was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Merritt branch honored him in 2002 presenting him with his 50 year Service Pin. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Merritt Royal Canadian Legion, 1940 Quilchena Avenue, Friday, October 20, 2006 at 1:00 P.M.
