It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear sister and aunt, Margaret Gillis, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Michael A.J. and Annie (MacInnis) Gillis.
Margaret had been employed as a civil servant with the federal government, retiring from Unemployment Insurance Canada, having worked in Moncton, Halifax and New Glasgow.
She was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Canadian Women Army Corps., in Canada and the U.K., and received the Queen’s Medal in 1977. Margaret was a member of Armstrong Branch #19, Royal Canadian Legion, North Sydney, and a member of St. Columba Roman Catholic Church in Iona.
Margaret is survived by her brother, Charles (Kaye) Gillis, Halifax; her niece, Marlene (Graham) Moore, Kingston, Ont.; three grandnieces, Jourdan, Ericha, Caroline.
She was predeceased by a sister, Roderiquez ‘Sis’ Gillis; half-brothers, Lawrence, Rannie; half-sisters, Florence Owens, Chippy Fraser, Marion Livingstone; and by a nephew, Kenneth.
Visitation for Margaret will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, in St. Columba Church hall, Iona. Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday 11 a.m. at St. Columba Church. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Columba Church building fund or any charity.
