Jack Francis Fitzer May 31, 1934 - Dec. 2, 2006 Sadly, and far too suddenly, Jack Fitzer slipped his earthly bonds and went to meet his beloved wife Ann on the steps of heaven. Gripped senselessly by cancer, Jack finally succumbed to the dreaded disease and passed away amongst family on the morning of December 2, 2006. He will be sorely missed by his children, Evan (Sharon), Lori (Marcel), and Jill (Daniel). As well, "Gramps" will be indelibly etched in the memories of his grandchildren, Travis, Erin, Nicolle and Andi. There was always a special place in his heart for them. Jack grew up in "Downtown" Magnetewan, Ontario. He had his own small trucking company and then left for Val D'Or, Quebec to begin a long career in mining starting at Sigma Mines. Leaving the volatile political climate of Quebec in 1968, Jack moved his family west, to Lower Nicola, BC where he worked as a surveyor and heavy-duty mechanic for Craigmont Mines until it's closure in 1982. He then did his "stint" in the north, taking jobs at various mining companies from the Queen Charlotte Islands to the Arctic Circle before finally deciding to move into semi-retirement working at Trig's Motors, where he was a resident mechanic and vehicle inspector. As time went on, he also helped develop, plan and maintain the Lower Nicola Water system and was an active member of the Community Association. A true "Jack of all Trades", he was a pilot, a trucker, a mechanic, a welder, a surveyor and a carpenter. If it needed to be done, he could do it. And he played a mean game of crib, although it's been told that he could never beat his older brother, Bill. Our family would very much like to express our heartfelt thanks to Sherry Scheitel of Merritt Home Care and the entire nursing staff at the Merritt Health Centre. Also, Dr. vander Mewre, Dr. Fugurski of Merritt, Dr. Kinnihan and researcher Joe Husch of Kelowna are owed our gratitude. As well, his poker playing buddies, who welcomed the "old man" as just one of the guys and made him feel young again. And lastly, the entire community of Lower Nicola, who gave our father's life purpose, fulfillment and enjoyment until the very end. Any and all who knew Jack are cordially invited to attend a quiet gathering at the Lower Nicola Community Hall on Sunday, December 10th at 1:00pm for coffee, tea, snacks and reminiscing. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
