Bryan Cole Richards, born in Kaslo, BC, August 14, 1951, died at home at the Hop Farm, Kamloops, BC, January 29, 2012 after a lengthy medical ordeal. Bryan attended grade school in Salmon Arm, high school in Prince George and graduated from UBC in 1976 with degrees in mathematics and computing.
He ran for the UBC track team, and excelled at playing chess and cards. His involvement in the Nichiren Shoshui Buddhist organization gave him meditation skills and spiritual peace. For over thirty years he tutored for the Open Learning Institute and wrote their industrial math course. In 1992 he began instructing math and computing at Thompson Rivers University developing curriculum, inspiring students, and being congenial to all. He chaired the Adult Basic Education Computer Studies group from 2006 - 2011. Bryan was called a genius computer programmer by his colleges. With everything he did, he was thorough, enthusiastic, and always strove for perfection. He founded and coached the Marmot slo-pitch team for almost 20 years, explored the universe with the Kamloops Astronomical Society, and relaxed by playing his saxophone. He was an avid runner, and loved squash and curling. The BC Lions and Canucks lost a loyal and constant fan. Always good humored, fun loving and kind, his intelligence and strong work ethic have been a positive example for those who knew him.
Bryan is lovingly remembered and will be sorely missed by his wife Beverly Markle, daughter Lisa Richards of Vancouver, sons Lester Richards of Kamloops, Tyler Markle (Becca and daughter Paysen) of Brisbane, Australia, and Chris Markle of Kamloops.
