The family of Hugh James (Hughie) McDonald sadly announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on December 03, 2009.
Born in Port Morien, August 23, 1926, Hughie was the 5th of 10 children of the late Augustine and Bertha (Phalen) McDonald.
Hughie held the position of Director of Social Services, where he stayed for 31 years until his retirement in 1991. He was on the board of directors of the John Howard Society and the Cape Breton Homemakers and was a founding member of the Port Morien Fire Department. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Morien.
He was well known for his quick wit, sense of humor and his ability to tell a story.
He is survived by his wife Pat (Edstrom); sons, Ken (Nancy), Port Morien, Paul (Val), Truro, and Keith (Sue), Halifax and grandchildren Katherine, Dennis, Leah, Glen, Frances, Andrew, Kate and Gillian; sister, Mary (Dave) Jelusich, Burlington; brothers, Kevin, Toronto, Garfield, Vancouver, and sister-in-law Hazel McDonald (Burlington).
Besides his parents he was predeceased by siblings Rita (Mac) Ferguson, Frances (Steve) O’Handley, Margaret (Basil) Nearing, Teresa (Neil) Wadden, Louis (Kay) and David as well as sister-in-law Frankie McDonald.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009 at St. Mary’s Church, Port Morien with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
Flowers gratefully declined.
