It is with sadness that the family of Senator Fred Dickson wish to announce his departure from his hometown, Truro, N.S. in search of new challenges. Fred passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S. on July 4, 1937, he was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Winnifred (Barrett) Dickson.
Fred is survived by his wife, Kaye of 49 years, and sons, Colin (Lisa) Halifax, Ian (Karen) Pennsylvania and daughter, Kathryn (Robert) Lee, Montreal. He unconditionally loved and supported the endeavours of his children and their families. As a grandfather, Fred enjoyed playing with and being in the company of his six wonderful grandchildren Daniel, Will, Josh, Katie, Olivia and Matthew. He loved their kind and gentle hearts and was inspired by their curiosity and energy.
Fred was a graduate of Morrison High School in Glace Bay, Acadia University BA and Dalhousie LLB. He enjoyed a wonderful active life and was surrounded by good friends wherever he travelled. Fred's winters often found him in the company of sports enthusiasts he admired greatly and his summers were enjoyed sailing on “Canada's Ocean Playground”. He took great pleasure in driving to Cape Breton with Kaye taking in the beautiful fall colours and seeing his Chester garden blossom each spring. On occasion, he shared the privilege of fly-fishing with his dear friends and colleagues and relished in the opportunities to beat them at cribbage.
In the later part of his career he was honoured to become a Senator (December 2008) in the Government of Canada. Senator Dickson was committed to working with fellow parliamentarians with the interests of Canadians being his priority.
The family of Senator Dickson was elated to learn that the Government of Canada awarded Senator Dickson the Diamond Jubilee Medal on Feb. 5, 2012.
Heartfelt thanks to dear family friends and caregivers of the VON whose support and love did not go unnoticed.
The memorial service will be held at the First United Church, Prince Street, Truro on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 at 10 a.m. with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Municipality of Chester, NS - P.R.O. Kids Program for children and youth recreational activities.
Condolences may be sent to freddicksonfamily@gmail.com.
