Born July 11, 1924, in Billiton, Indonesia, Sjoerd F.W. vanHasselt passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, P.E.I., aged 83 years - from one Island to another. An adventurer, sailor, world traveler, linguist, educator and a career with Sears head office, Toronto. Longtime friend of Howard Gay, Edna Gay, Schurman family friends and numerous relatives around the world. Special thanks to Dr. Vickerson and the wonderful nursing staff at the Prince County Hospital, Palliative/Medical wards. Cremation has taken place. No visiting hours or funeral service by personal request. Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Loving fiancé to Nicole Gaudet of Tignish. Born on Sept. 19, 1960, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (nee Arsenault) Richard. Dear brother to Emile (Agnes) of Toronto, Ont.; Mae (the late Kenneth) Gavin of London, Ont.; Marjorie (Doug) Cookley of Toronto; Jean (the late Angus) MacDonald of Toronto; Rosie Richard (Leigh Doucette) of Toronto; Omer (Geraldine) of St. Edwards; Shirley (Douglas) McKenna of Charlottetown; Danny and Raymond of Tignish; Sandra (Elmer) McRae of Ft. MacMurray, Alta. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Elizabeth and by one sister and four brothers Edna, Reggie, Allan, Bernie and Kenneth. Resting at the Rooney Funeral Home, Alberton. Funeral on Tuesday afternoon from St. Simon and St. Jude Church, Tignish, for funeral mass at 4 p.m. Interment in the church cemetery. If so desired, memorials to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Visiting hours Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until time of funeral.
