Mr. Hugh Robert Reid, 85, of Glace Bay and formerly of Donkin passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Donkin, Hugh was the son of the late John Robert and Sadie (Matheson) Reid.
He was employed for 48 years with Dominion Steel and Coal Company and with Devco starting out at #24 colliery followed by 1B and then # 26 collieries and retiring from Lingan colliery in 1989.
Hugh was a longtime member of the Donkin Citizen’s Brass Band. He was Past Master of the Thistle Lodge #36 AF AM and a former member of Newsom United Church choir and a present member of St. Luke’s United Church and choir in Donkin. Hugh also was a member of the Legionnaires Mens Chorus, Glace Bay and he sat on the board of directors of both the Miner’s Museum and the Glace Bay General Hospital.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth (MacLeod); daughter, Helen (Lawrence ‘Lonnie’) Murphy, Glace Bay; and son, Ken (Charlene) Reid, Donkin; brothers, Campbell (Hazel) Reid, Halifax and Andrew Reid, Glace Bay. Hugh will be missed by his loving grandchildren, Colin (Kerri), Glace Bay, Terry (Raven), Slave Lake, Alta., Jennifer (Dave), Donkin, John Robert (Tara), Glace Bay; and his two great-granddaughters, Callie and Jayln.
Hugh was predeceased by brothers, John and Holland and a sister in infancy.
Visitation for Mr. Hugh Reid will be held Monday, Dec. 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will follow Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin with Rev. Chris Matheson officiating with Interment to follow at St. Luke’s United Church Cemetery.
