MAIO On April 7th, 2007 Mr. Antonio Maio of Kamloops, passed away at the age of 71 years after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Antonio is predeceased by his parents Lorenzo and Satorna Maio, and his brothers Peppino and Vincenzo. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Giovanna; his two children Lorenzo (Barb) Maio and Santina Rende (Ken Christie); his sisters Maria Amantea and Gilda Maio; his four grandchildren Jennifer (Brent) Dupuis, Christopher Rende (Jennifer Vint), Nicholas Maio (Candace Schneider), Bradley Maio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Antonio was born on June 13th, 1935 in Grimaldi, Province of Cosenza, Italy, (the day also celebrated as the Feast of St. Antonio). On October 15th, 1951, at the age of sixteen, he immigrated to Canada on the ship "Argentina," arriving in Halifax. As a young man he traveled by train to Trail, British Columbia, where he resided until 1954. He then moved to Kamloops where he met his wife and they married on July 13th, 1957. He remained in Kamloops until his passing, where he spent his years working, enjoying his family and hobby farm. As with most immigrants at that time, Antonio had numerous jobs working at various mills and pipelines during his residence in Kamloops. His lengthiest and last job was at Tranquille School as a cook, from May of 1965 until its shutdown in 1985, retiring at the age of 50 years. Antonio's greatest passion in his life was first and foremost his family. He lived for his family, and enjoyed all the adventures he undertook with his grandchildren. His days spent on his hobby farm in Westsyde were his most fulfilling, where he would spend hours climbing the mountainside, taking care of his farm animals, horseback riding, and gardening. He loved all that the outdoors could offer and would love to spend that time with his family fishing and hunting. One of his biggest joys was to entertain his family and friends with his stories, jokes, and his homemade wine. The family wishes to thank Dr. V. Krauss, Dr. S. Treissman, Dr. W. Stinson, and the staff of 5 South at RIH for their care, kindness and support. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Tara of 5 South, for the compassion and care she provided to Antonio and his family members during their most difficult time. Prayers will be recited on Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Reverend Father Peter Nguyen will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 12th, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the church. Entombment will follow at Sage Valley Mausoleum. Should family and friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the RIH Cancer Foundation in memory of Antonio would be greatly appreciated. "Always remember the good times, the flowers and crystal streams, the scent of the pines, the smell of the spring poplar buds, a good moose steak, and the smell of fresh coffee" Your dear friend, Tom.
