Shirley Coldwell

Shirley Isobel Coldwell 88 years of Springhill, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2012 in Northumberland Hall, Amherst. Born in Asquith, Saskatchewan, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Agnes Richardson (Mather) Allbon.
Shirley moved with her parents to Springhill at the age of two. She obtained a Certificate in Business from Mt. Allison University where she also took voice lessons. At a young age, she went to work for her dad at the Springhill Record as a reporter. Following her marriage to Ted Coldwell on September 29, 1944, and the birth of her children, she remained at home to raise her children. She eventually returned to the Springhill Record to become co-owner and later editor of the Springhill-Parrsboro Record. She was a lifelong active member of St. Andrews-Wesley United Church, sang solos as well as with the choir, instructed the Junior choir and was church organist. She was accomplished at domestic arts, loved doing needlework, sewing, was a great cook, an avid gardener who loved plants and flowers. Shirley along with the late Evelyn Rushton started the first figure skating Club in Springhill and voluntered with the Arthritis Society for many years. She was very family focused, she loved family gatherings, maintained correspondence with many friends, and kept close contact with in-laws in England. Shirley was involved with the Drama Club, enjoyed dancing, parties, music and especially her cats. Shirley was a lifelong cheerleader for all things Springhill.
She is survived by her children; Ted (Stephanie) Coldwell and Dale (John) Mont; grandchildren, Chris Mont, Michael (Linda) Mont and Ted (Julie) Coldwell; twelve great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of more than fifty years, Edwin "Ted" Coldwell; brother, Jack Allbon.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) from where visitation was held from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Funeral service held 2:00 pm Monday, March 12, 2012 from St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Main Street, Springhill, with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, at a later date.
