Hugh Crawford
Lieu de naissance : New Waterford, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 10 mars 2012
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hugh Crawford surrounded by his loving family on March 10, 2012, at Harbourstone, Sydney, N.S.
Hugh was born and raised in the town of New Waterford where he lived life to the fullest.
He served his community as a firefighter since 1963 until his retirement. Hughie valued the occasions to drive the ‘Jimmy P’ fire truck in a parade or just around the block. There is a collective sense of loss as we recall his commitment to keeping his community safe. He was an avid sports fan, especially travelling to Toronto to cheer on his favourite teams, the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs. He was a keen supporter of many local teams — Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, New Waterford Hawks. He loved to play golf, darts and bowling, as well as to go skating. Hughie loved to drive far and wide in search of a good bingo game. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3209 New Waterford and the New Waterford Pensioner Club.
Hugh was the son of the late Thomas and Clara (Gillis) Crawford.
He leaves to mourn his best friend and loving wife of 44 years, Frances (Young) Crawford; cherished daughter, Margaret Ann Crawford-Diamond; his trusted friend and son-in-law, Mark Diamond, Georges River, N.S.; and his step-grandson, Brandon Diamond, Edmonton, Alta. He is survived by his sister, Jessie Fitzpatrick, Red Deer, Alta.; brothers, Douglas (Tuddy) Crawford, Brampton, Ont., Thomas Crawford, New Waterford, N.S.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law.
He was predeceased by his dear sister, Margaret (Wilfred) Hurley and brother-in-law, Paul Fitzpatrick.
He will also be sadly missed by his faithful walking buddy and companion Tempest. Hughie will be missed by all who knew him.
Special thanks to Dr. Glen Worth, the palliative care team and to the professional, compassionate staff who assisted in his care and who were so kind to Hugh at MacDougall Court, Harbourstone.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 15, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Jimmy Oliver officiating. There will be a private interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
All are invited to join the family for a reception at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, 310 Convent St., New Waterford, following the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh’s memory can be made to the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department or charity of your choice.

I’ve been alone
When I’m surrounded by friends
How could the silence be so loud
But I still go home knowing that I’ve got you
There’s only us when lights go down
