“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
On March 10, 2012, at the age of 98, Evelyn Johanna Oursen passed away peacefully in the An Cala Palliative Care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Evelyn was born on March 9, 1914, in Canso and was lovingly raised by her father, Frank Ryan, mother, Eva (DeCoste) and stepmother, Mary (Parker).
“Mom” will be sadly missed by daughter Marina and son Alex. She resided with both her children until the time of her passing. Marina and Alex met all Evelyn’s needs lovingly with patience and strength. Her grandson, Alex ‘Sandy’ Small had a very special bond with his grandmother. Sandy was her joy and he made sure she was at family gatherings, went to mass, out for drivers and they often shared an occasional ice cream too! Evelyn’s nurturing love and care will be missed by Sandy’s wife, Kerry and their daughter Erin. She is also survived by a loving brother, Jim Ryan of Vancouver, B.C. ”Nan” loved being a great-grandmother to Erin. The time they spent together was precious and filled with smiles, giggles, hugs and kisses.
Evelyn carried with her a very strong faith and a zest for life that was an inspiration to her family. Saying the rosary was one pass time that she cherished. Even in her last days, she could be heard telling those around her to say their prayers.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Alex Oursen, in June of 1986, sisters, Mary Leone, Florence McGrath, Regina Layes, Sr. Teresa Ryan CSM, Sr. Rita Ryan OSC, Stella MacIssac, and Patsy Flemming, and brothers, Francis, Joseph, Donald, Daniel and David.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Sacred Heart Church, George Street, with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
