It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Mary Alexandra Victoria (Mizzi) Ferguson on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney, Jan. 21, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Salvo and Frances (Lyons) Mizzi.
Mom liked to tell people that she travelled when she was younger, going to visit family in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta. She grew up in a large family in the north end of Sydney and worked at Diana Sweets on Charlotte Street before getting married and starting her own family. Always a very special lady, mom was a strong-willed, courageous and caring individual. She devoted her life to raising her family and always worked hard to take care of all of us. The family spent a few years in North Sydney before settling in the Shipyard for many, many years. As her family grew up and moved out of the house, mom worked part time at Helen’s Dairy on Alexandra Street and at Sun Life Insurance office. She lived for a few years in Toronto, spent several years back in Sydney as a resident of Rockelm Apartments, 1249 George St. and then lived for nine years in Dartmouth. In her later years, she returned to Sydney, and became a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
She is survived by sons, George ‘Porgie’, Dartmouth, William ‘Bill’ (Arlene), Sydney, Bruce (Karen), Calgary; daughters, Ann (Bill) Dares, Sydney, Judy (John) MacMillan, Dartmouth, Natalie (Kevin) Fennell, Sydney Forks. Also survived by sisters, Cecilia Marusiak and Eileen Baldwin, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Anna Mizzi, Ontario and Bertha MacAulay, Sydney; brother-in-law, John (Harriett) Ferguson, Quebec; 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sons, Robert and John, in infancy; daughter, Margaret ‘Peggy’ Williamson; son-in-law, Archie Williamson; daughter-in-law, Linda Ferguson; sisters, Melita Newton, Ester Meloche, Rita Coleman and Margaret Mizzi; brothers, George and Eddie Mizzi and former husband, George Ferguson.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday 1p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney. Following the service, a reception will be held downstairs at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff of Soldiers Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care and Palliative Care of Cape Breton for the care and concern that was given to mom.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
