McCLELLAND, Paul Judson – 85, Bible Hill, son of the late Richard (1951) and Verna (Ayer) (1981), passed away peacefully, Friday, March 16, 2012, at Wynn Park Villa, Truro. He was born in Port Greville, Cumberland County, in 1926, where he lived as a youth. He served with North Nova Reserves and sixth division of Royal Canadian Artillery in the Second World War. He worked on the Canadian National Railroad from 1946 to 1982, was a member of Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America and the local union representative. Paul was a man of faith and lived it daily. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, Truro, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher as well as on other committees. He was a Past President, founding and Honorary Director for Life of Bible Hill Cemetery Commission, Commissioner of Village of Bible Hill, Life Member of Bible Society and former Gideon. As a Gideon, he enjoyed visiting churches as a lay minister. One of his greatest pleasures was giving New Testaments to Grade five students each year. In 1967, the New Testaments were presented at Holy Well Park where he had designed and constructed the original Bible monument for the well. In 1997, he restored the Bible monument that is still present there today. He built many elaborate floats for local parades. He was a man of many interests and talents. His lifelong love of the ocean was evident in his paintings, his boats and the pleasure he took in spending time at the Shanty on the North Shore with his family. In his latter years, he struggled with Alzheimer’s, but the strength of his personality shone through. He will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and by all who knew him as a man of great personal character and warmth; a true gentleman. He was loved and loving and will be missed every day. Paul is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 65 years, Hazel (McNutt); children, David (Margaret) and their children, Paul and Christine; Paulette (Stephen) Yorke and their children Erin Muise (Alexandre), Johanna Matthews (Michael), Matthew (Chera), Timothy and Brendan; Ruth (Robert) Barnhill and their children, Karla O’Leary (Wade) and Mitchell (Jayne); Rebecca (Raymond) Bartlett and their children, Mallory and Keltie; Mark (Charlotte) and their children, Mark, Adam, Jaclyn and Craig; great grandchildren, Meika and Mark Matthews, Rileigh O’Leary and Anna Yorke; brother, Perley (Thelma); sisters-in-law, Gladys Faulkner, Mabel McNutt, Betty Culgin, Jean Lynds; many nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his sisters, June Cousins, Thelma Waye; Verna’s second husband, Vernon Hannan. Hazel would like to thank the staff of Wynn Park Villa for the special care given to Paul. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Reverend Dr. Frank Guinta, Jr. officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Bible Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only.
