Sybil (Ripley) MacLennan of Baddeck passed away suddenly but peacefully at Victoria County Memorial Hospital March 4, 2012, at the age of 92.
Sybil was born in Truro, Sept. 16, 1919, the daughter of the late James William and Cora Ethel (Baird) Ripley.
Sybil worked in Truro until she married Sam MacLennan and then they lived in Halifax, Noel and Baddeck Forks, where he studied and then practised ministry in the United Church. They settled in the village of Baddeck when Sam’s failing health caused him to give up active ministry.
The church was a focal point for Sybil and she was an active church member. Contributing to the lives of the young people as a Sunday school teacher/superintendent, CGIT leader and vocation Bible school. She was also a valued member of the UCW and previously the session. She had a strong faith and lived her life accordingly.
Sybil was an avid gardener, loved watching for each new bud or bloom and was generous with slips and roots. She enjoyed knitting and baking and shared these goods as well. Her trips to Truro to spend time with her sisters were always a highlight for her.
Sybil is survived by her son, Ken, Baddeck; niece, Barb Henderson-Townsend (Glen), Welshtown Lake; sister, Ethel McNutt, Elk Court Ether Court Brookfield; and many more nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Sam in 1980, brothers, Watson, Ainslie ‘Bill,’ Norval, Everett, sisters, Jennie Boomer, Gwyn Ripley, Bertha White and Laura Henderson.
A memorial service to celebrate Sybil’s life will be held Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. at Greenwood United Church in Baddeck, Rev. Alison Etter officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be in the South Haven, Harbor View Cemetery.
Memorial donations gratefully accepted and can be made to the Greenwood United Church, Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Foundation or a charity of your choice.
