Donald Edwin Bowness - Stratford, Prince Edward Island, formerly of Truro. Don passed away peacefully on his 97th birthday at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with family at his side. Born March 22, 1915, in Kensington, Prince Edward Island, he was a son of the late Heath L. and Bridget (Profitt)(Leslie) Bowness. Having been employed with The Bank of Nova Scotia at various branches throughout the Maritimes, Don retired in 1970 while in River John. He was further employed with Brookfield Foods, division of Scotsburn Co-op Services, as Credit Manager for 15 years, retiring in 1985. Don served with Royal Canadian Army Pay Corp from 1942-1946. He was a 74-year member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge, Kensington, Prince Edward Island, and was a long time member of St. David’s United Church, Bible Hill, where he enjoyed being a member of St. David’s Men’s Club. Along with his parents, Don was predeceased by Olive, his loving wife of 59 years; half sisters, Glenn (Leslie) Bowness; Vern (Leslie) Pidgeon. Don is survived by his sons, Donald Jr. (Marie), Richard (Maralyn); grandchildren, Deanna, Jennifer (Craig), Gayle (Nate), Karen; great grandchildren, Keigan, Phinley, Maddox, Grace, Brody. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the concern and support of Dad’s many friends, St. David’s United Church, management and staff of Andrews of Stratford and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Don's family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, March 24, 2012. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, March 25, 2012, at St. David's United Church, corner of Pictou Road and St. David's Avenue, Bible Hill, Reverend Donna Lawrence officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Bible Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Don's memory to St. David’s United Church, Bible Hill Cemetery or a charity of one's choice are welcomed.
