It is with deep, deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Eldon Roper Johnston at his home on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines, Aug. 25, 1934, Eldon was the son of the late Edison and Nettie (Roper) Johnston.
He was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. Eldon was a man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He was known for his wonderful sense of humour, and always ready to share a good joke. He was a family man who always put the needs of his children and grandchildren first. He was employed with Devco as an electrician for 36 years, until his retirement in 1995. Since then he spent most of his time with his loving wife Rose, and their grandchildren.
Eldon leaves behind his loving wife of 50 years, Rose (Harrietha) Johnston; his children, Paul (Betty Lynn), Ann Marie (Roddie), Joyce (Michael) Jesty, David (Jennifer) and Troy (Leann). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren, Darren, Tara (Jeff) Penny, Tiffany, Brandon, Matthew, Andrew, Hannah, Noah, Jacob, Samantha and Kassie; great-grandchildren, Colby, Benjamin and Adora; brothers, Murray, Jack, David (Betty) and Kenny (Janet); brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry Flowers, Adrian (Sharon) Harrietha, Babe (Ted), Tillie Harrietha, Joyce Harrietha, Loretta Johnston, Carol Johnston and Connie Johnston; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many dear friends, including a lifelong friend, Ann MacKinnon.
Besides his parents, Eldon was predeceased by brothers, Byron, Reid, and Ronnie, his only sister, Audrey Colburn, brothers and sister-in-law, Carlotta Flowers, Lenny Harrietha and Clarence Harrietha.
Visitation for Eldon Johnston will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Monday, Dec. 14) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass celebrating his life will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eldon’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care, or to a charity of one’s choice.
