Isabel Florence MacFarlane, 94, of Baddeck, N.S., passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the Alderwood Rest Home.
Born Dec. 26, 1914, in Whycocomagh, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Kate (MacMillan) Matheson.
She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder for many years, a charter member of the Victoria Chapter No. 19 of the Eastern Star, life member of the Atlantic Missionary Society, the Alexander Graham Bell Club and the Baddeck Public Library Society. She served as Baddeck Village commissioner for several years. She was a lifelong member of the Liberal Party of Canada (and proud of it). She was a member of the home and school association, Baddeck Board of Trade, the Victoria Players Drama Club, Arm of Gold Seniors Club and the Matheson Clan Society. Isabel was very active in her community over the years.
Although she was a resident of Baddeck for 67 years, her love of Hogamagh (Whycocomagh) never waivered.
Isabel was an artist of many talents but especially known for her “tatting†which is a dying art. She was an avid birdwatcher, great storyteller and amateur genealogist.
One of Isabel’s greatest joys was her weekly bridge game with the ‘girls’ where the jokes were plentiful, the food and drink second to none and the cards terrible!
Isabel’s home was always open and nobody left without a cup of tea and a good laugh. In the past few years she was blessed with exceptional care from home care services, private caregivers Barb, Connie, Marilyn and Elaine and the staff of the Alderwood Rest Home.
She is survived by her sons, Shane (Agnes), Peter (Isabelle); daughters, Mary (Robert) Hill, Margot (Donnie) Macaulay, Aynsley; grandchildren, Derek (Laura), Brenda, Mel (Stephie) MacFarlane, Margaret (Tim) MacRae, Katherine and Alex Macaulay; great-grandchildren, Paige and Kenzie MacFarlane; a number of nieces and nephews; grand and great-grandnieces and nephews and special family member Doug Fowler.
She was predeceased by her infant brother, Norman Garfield and sister, Edith (Fred) Austen; her husband, Gordon MacFarlane and son, Donnie, her niece, Nita (Earl) Matthews.
Visitation to be held at MacAskill Funeral Home, Grant Street, Baddeck, Thursday, Dec. 17 from 2-8 p.m. (OES 7 p.m.). The funeral will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Friday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Cameron Brett officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations made to a charity of your choice.
