She was an accomplished writer, pianist, actor, singer and painter. She loved to play tennis, canoe, ski and ice-skate as well as go camping with her family. Frances met her husband, Gordon, in high school when she was directing a play and he was performing in the school orchestra. They were at a school dance when Gordon commented to a friend that this was the girl he was going to marry. Frances' father, Air Vice Marshall F.V. Heakes, was posted to England in 1937. She attended high school in Wimbledon where she excelled in her studies, achieving top marks in her classes and making many friends. She loved going to the theatre, museums, and art galleries as well as sight-seeing in England and Scotland. Frances and her family were hurriedly sent home at the start of WW II. Her father returned to Canada later to help prepare for the defense of the eastern seaboard. She enrolled at McMaster University and her beloved Gordon enrolled in the Canadian Air Force. Gordon was granted occasional leave while training to be a pilot and on one such leave proposed to Frances. They corresponded while he was in training and serving overseas, as a pilot of Sunderland Flying Boats, protecting shipping lanes from Britain to Newfoundland. Over those war years, Frances earned her BA Degree from McMaster. Gordon was granted leave in July 1944 to return to Canada to get married. War separated them again for many months. Then Gordon and Frances were posted to Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island where Gordon was assigned to train new pilots. They made the decision to settle in the Lower Mainland. Frances returned to university at the age of 52 to get her teacher training at Simon Fraser University. She had many wonderful experiences as a high school relief teacher over the next few years. She then spent several years working for Social Services in Abbotsford. Frances was training care-givers of children and developing services for immigrant women workers. She also organized conferences for the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation. Frances worked tirelessly to develop safe housing programs for those with mental health problems. Soon after retiring, Frances and Gordon moved to Paul Lake to be closer to their Kamloops' families. When Gordon's health declined, they moved to Ponderosa Place where they enjoyed several happy years. After Gordon's passing, Frances moved into Kamloops Seniors Village. There she enjoyed the companionship of other seniors, the caring support of the staff and kind assistance from High Country Health Care workers. During her last weeks, Frances was cared for by her family and staff at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice, in Kamloops. The family would like to thank them for their tender and gracious care of Frances. Many thanks to Elaine Diggle and Rev. Bruce Comrie from the United Church and to Father Derek from Sacred Heart Cathedral, three special people who provided Frances with spiritual comfort and blessings. Many thanks also to Dr. Mark Langford for his skillful care and kindness. Frances' loving family gave her daily gifts of poetry, songs and happy reminiscences. We will miss you, dearest one. Farewell until we meet again. Friends and family are invited to attend the Funeral Services for Frances on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at Schoening's Funeral Home, officiant Rev.
