MacDonald, Charles Malcolm, 96, Halifax. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father on Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Lt. Colonel Albert and Jennie (Maxwell) MacDonald. Dad served overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and participated in the D-Day landings in France. He held the rank of Captain and was Company-Commander during the invasion. He was wounded during the Battle of Caen and was invalided home. He later rejoined his unit in Germany and served with the Occupation Forces until he repatriated home in December of 1946. Dad later began his career with Squibb Pharmaceutical Company and later became General Manager of Weck Surgical Supplies in Toronto, a parent company of Squibb until his retirement in 1975. Dad was an avid bridge player achieving master points. He had a good sense of humor, which kept smiles on many faces. Dad was a source of strength, encouragement and support for all who knew him. His legacy will live on.
He is survived by a son Robert (Terri) of Duluth, Georgia; daughters Barbara Hopkins (Gerry) of Enfield, Joanne MacDonald (Chris Woodyatt) of Georgetown, Ontario; grandchildren, Stephen, Michael, Kim, Kristopher, Cory, Matthew, Gavin, Jacqui; great-grandchildren Noah, Lucas, Ava, Ryan, Evan, Helea, Phoenix, Ariel.
He was predeceased by his first wife Wendy Robertson; brother Ralph and sisters Eileen and Jean.
Visitation will take place from 1 pm until 1:45pm, followed by the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 26, Truro, Legion Tribute Service and followed by the funeral service at 2pm, Tuesday April 17th, all in the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Rev. Cory Somers will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
