It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Lewis ‘Big Lou’ MacDonald of Dominion on Thursday, April 12th, at home with family at his side.
Born in Dominion he is the son of the late Alexander and Blanche (MacPhee) MacDonald.
Lou is survived by his daughters Louise (Brennan Nearing), (Burnaby, British Columbia) and Cindy (Barrie, Ontario).
Among those most special to Lou were cousins Joe and Jody Flynn, nieces Mary McDonald and Delores MacAdam and friends who were more like family to him, Cathy, Bernie and Cassie Gillis, Fred Turnbull and Diane Buchanan.
He was married to Edna for 35 years, she predeceased him in 2002.
Lou is also predeceased by brothers Arthur (Art), Harvey, Michael (Al); sisters Evelyn and Florence; three siblings in infancy and special Aunt Florence Flynn. Surviving siblings include brothers Earl (Glace Bay), Joe (Glace Bay), Donald (Bolton, Ontario) and sisters Claire (Mississauga, Ontario) and Mary (Dominion).
Lou joined the Canadian military when he was just 17 and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Upon leaving the military he returned home to Cape Breton and his home, Dominion. During the 1970's he served on Dominion Town Council and the local school board.
He was employed as a coal miner until the opening of the Cape Breton Correctional Centre in 1975, where he served as a guard until his retirement in the 1980's.
‘Big Lou’ will always be remembered for his spirit of generosity, his good nature, his love of Cape Breton, his hometown of Dominion and especially his love for Dominion Beach. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements are being carried out under the direction of Curry's Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Lou’s life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18th at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Internment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Donations in Lou’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
