We the family, regret to announce the passing of Pearl Mitchell on April 17, 2012, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she the eldest child of William and Lavina (Reid) Vokey.
Pearl was a former graduate of the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing. Following her graduation she pursued her career in nursing in the USA in hospitals in Hackensack, San Diego and Seattle, but most of her nursing career was spent in New York City where she worked until her retirement. It was then that she and her husband decided to take up residence in Glace Bay.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Glace Bay.
Pearl is survived by her brother, Freeman (Florence) Vokey and her sister, Lavinia with whom she resided, as well as her sister-in-law Annie Vokey. She is also survived by nephews, John, Jerry, Robert, Trevor, Billy and Jeffrey and nieces, Sherill, Janice, Marlene, Karen, Elaine, Yyonne, Brenda and Barbara; along with several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Ralph Mitchell, she was predeceased by brothers, John and his wife Noreen, Ernest, Calvert, Robert, Stanley and Alex and a sister, Jessie, also predeceasing her was her niece Pearl Gallant and her nephew Reginal Vokey.
She will be dearly missed by her friend Emily MacIsaac who was a constant help to her and by her little yorkie Zoe.
Visitation will take place for Pearl in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Wednesday, April 18, 2012). Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Brookside Street, Glace Bay, with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. A reception will take place at St. Paul’s Church following interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
