It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernard McGillivary, 95, of Royal Avenue, Dominion, and a former resident of 1-B Road, Glace Bay. Bernie passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at his residence with his loving family by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, Bernie was the son of the late John and Jessie (McIsaac) McGillivary.
He was a member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion. Bernie was employed with Devco working at 1B Colliery and #26 Colliery retiring in 1981 after 42 years of service. Bernie was a very proud veteran of the Second World War and member of Branch #3 Legion, Glace Bay. Bernie was a wonderful and loving family man. He looked forward to family gatherings. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bernie will be sadly missed by his loving children, Barbara (Leo) Carrigan, Gardiner Mines, Marie (Emilio) Vaninetti, Dominion, Cordell (Linda) McGillivary, Sydney; seven cherished grandchildren, Michael (Sherri) Carrigan, Halifax, Liesje Carrigan, Boston, Nadine Vaninetti, Halifax, Gina Vaninetti (Christian Gallagher), Halifax, Ryan McGillivary (Katie Sullivan), Moncton, N.B., Angela McGillivary (Robbi Hill), Sydney, Aimee McGillivary, Sydney. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Zoe and Jay Carrigan, Hudson Hill and several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, Bernie was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend, Edith 'Edie' (McDonald) in 2008, sisters, Sr. Mary Pius, Florence McGillivary, Susie McGillivary, brothers, John Angus, Charles, Joe, Bill and Duncan.
Visitation for Bernie will be held Friday, April 20, 2012, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012, at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport. A reception will follow in St. Eugene’s Church Hall.
Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to the VON or Palliative Care.
