Mabel Lillian Horton

Horton, Mabel Lillian “MacPherson” (nee Gosbee), It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing surrounded by her family at the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Born in Roachvale on July 2, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Laurella (Hensbee) Gosbee. Besides her parents she was predeceased by brothers, Pete, Ralph and sisters, Marion and Martha, as well as her first husband, Edwin MacPherson in 1984 and her second husband, Ralph Horton in 2010. Mabel is survived by her three loving children, Rev. Connie Stewart (Duane), Rev. Betty Johnson (Ron) and only son Jim MacPherson (Theresa). Grandchildren, Chris Tilley (Sherry), Anne MacCallum (Dwayne), James MacPherson (Jaclyn), Carrie MacKinnon (Jamie) and Joseph MacPherson. Great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Dylan, Jayden MacCallum and Seth MacPherson. Mabel was a teacher in the one room school house, Marie Joseph, Guysborough for a number of years and enjoyed the teachings and learnings with the children. She later worked for Dominion both in Truro and Scarborough. She moved herself into the position as head cashier and enjoyed the customer service and many friends she came to know and love. Mabel’s hobbies included crafting ceramics, quilting and knitting especially when they were treasures she was making for her grandchildren or great grandchildren. She loved spending time with friends and especially family over a meal that she loved to prepare for those around her. Mabel was always involved in the church’s Women’s Missionary Society, including several years as President. She taught Sunday school, served as a counselor at Billy Graham Crusades and was a Charter Member of the Milliken Wesleyan Church in Agincourt, Ontario. Visitation will be held 6 ~ 8pm Saturday, April 21, in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro and again 2 ~ 3pm Sunday, April 22, in the Immanuel Baptist Church, Young Street Truro, where funeral service will follow at 3pm with Rev. Cory Somers officiating. A reception and celebration of Mabel’s life will be held in the church hall following the funeral service. Interment to be held at a later date in the Watson Cemetery, East Prince Street Truro. Family flowers only. Donations in Mabel’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
