It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Charles Murdock MacDonald, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his family by his side.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Born in Sydney, he was the youngest son of the late Albert and Katherine MacDonald.
Following his early years working on the family dairy farm, Charles joined MS MacDonald Co. Ltd. as a heavy equipment operator. In 1981, he accepted a position in the maintenance department of Ben Eoin Beach Ltd., retiring in 1999, at age 76.
Charles, blessed with a beautiful tenor voice, performed in Kiwanis festivals and youth choirs. He also performed in many Rotary productions, the Baptist choir and the Sydney River United Protestant Church choir. A former member of the Men’s Brotherhood, the Sons of Temperance, Clan Donald and the Gaelic Society.
Charles enjoyed travelling to England, Scotland and numerous provinces to visit family. He was an avid skater in his younger years. Later in life, he loved cottage life, card playing and going for drives, especially on country roads.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, June (Latham); stepdaughters, Jennifer Dunford, Howie Centre, Tiffany (Denny) Stearns, Colorado, U.S.A.; step-granddaughter, Eden Rose Dunford, Howie Centre; brother-in-law, David (Lorraine) Latham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was predeceased by his brother, Malcolm S. (Shirley), Vernon (Thelma), John Y. (Evelyn) and by his sister, Gertrude (Harold) Nickerson.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the home care workers, the staff of St. Ann’s Bay at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, the ER staff, the staff of 4C and 4D and doctors, G. Gracie, M. Smith, D. Miller for their care and compassion in caring for Charles.
At his request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A celebration of life service will take place at Sydney River United Protestant Church, Saturday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the MacLeod Hall. Burial is to take place at the Alfred Smith Memorial Cemetery in Sydney Forks following the reception. Family flowers only.
