Thomas J. McNamara, 86, Halifax, formerly of Sydney Mines passed away peacefully December 16, 2009 at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Halifax, N.S.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ellen (Nellie) ( Peck) McNamara.
He is survived by son, David, of Halifax and a sister, Mary Quirk of North Sydney.
Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Joyce (Wilson ) in 1975; daughter, Ellen Louise in infancy and his brother, Wendell.
Following service with the Canadian Army during the Second World War, Thomas held various municipal and provincial government positions until his retirement from the Cape Breton Assessment Region as a provincial tax assessor.
Known to his wide circle of friends and associates as (Tommy Mac), he had a warm and engaging personality with a quick wit. Tommy Mac enjoyed a life long involvement with his principal passions of harness racing, baseball, hockey and boxing. His sports involvement included executive positions with the Northside Junior Hockey and the Sydney Mines Ramblers of the Cape Breton Colliery Baseball League.
A reception to remember the life of (Tommy Mac) will take place at Ashburn Golf & Country Club, 3250 Joseph Howe Dr., Halifax, on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 from 2-4 p.m.
A memorial mass will take place in Sydney Mines, N.S., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.
