Lieu de décès : Inverary, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 11 mai 2012
Marthe Emma (Timmons) Etheridge passed peacefully at Inverary Manor, Inverness.
Marthe was born in Margaree Centre to Gordon Bennett and Margaret (Hill) Timmons, Sunny Corner, N.B., who met in Maine, USA.
They returned to North Windam, Maine when Marthe was eight and she moved back to Margaree at age 20 to marry Albert Etheridge after meeting him once more at age18. Albert built their home in 1934 (with two dollars in his pocket). In 1971 he was on the board which constructed Inverary Manor, which he could foresee as their retirement home. At 86, Marthe moved into the manor and has received loving care from all the staff during the past 12 years.
Together they raised four daughters, Tanya (Jud) Carmichael, Margaree Valley, Kathleen (Walter) Ingraham, Coxheath, Muriel (Doug) Ross, Northeast Margaree, Sandra (Darrell) Carmichael, Port Williams. They produced 16 beautiful and much loved grandchildren and 33 adorable great-grandchildren.
Marthe was a loving mother, wife and community worker. She was a self taught dress designer, competent bookkeeper and wonderful cook. Her fresh bread, rolls, biscuits, pies and cookies were loved by all, and oh – those doughnuts she made on a summers evening.
She efficiently ran her household so that she always had time to volunteer. She was a member of Wilson United Church, UCW, Home and School, Eastern Star Lodge, ICCMH Auxiliary and Chaplency Committee.
She loved teenagers and taught 4-H Club, Explorers, Senior Sunday School and spent many years as superintendent and treasurer.
With her Albert, she operated Etheridge Cabins for 25 years, welcoming tourists, fisherman, hunters and Cape Breton miners to Margaree. Farm operations included dairy and beef cattle, pork and chickens. Albert sold lumber to Sydney from mills across Inverness County. With their young son-in-law, Jud Carmichael, they formed Etheridge and Carmichael Pulp Company to cut and truck pulp to Stora in 1960. Marthe was office manager and bookkeeper for all these ventures. She trained young women in the community as bookkeepers to help her.
She tolerated Albert’s new horse racing hobby in 1960 but was never a fan. She refused to watch a horse race as she feared there might be an accident. Albert suffered a serious head injury in August 1983 at Inverness Raceway. She lovingly cared for him until his death in March 1984.
She also leaves to mourn 14 grandchildren, Beth, Wendy, John, Jamie, Patricia, Jackie, Joclyne, Laurie, Suzanne, Tracey, Allison, Barbara, Angela, Martha and 31 great-grandchildren. She prayed every night for them to find the right mate as she had done. She is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
Marthe was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Anna; brother, Calvin; precious granddaughter, Hannah; grandson, Matthew and great-grandchildren, Sameon Ruth and Lucas.
Marthe supported many foster children from Dr. Grahams Homes, India and Plan International. She would prefer we gave a gift to charity in her honour then to get a gift herself. She had a double cataract surgery in her eighties and was thankful for the gift of sight.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Marthe’s memory may be given to Wilson United Church Building Fund, Inverary Manor, Christian Blind Mission or charity of your choice.
