NEW GLASGOW – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian Theresa Martin on December 23, 2009 in Glen Haven Manor, formerly of Campbell’s Lane, New Glasgow, and Beech Street, Halifax.
Lillian was born on July 15, 1917, and was a daughter of the late Bresnan and Mary Alice (Power) Purcell, Portuguese Cove, Halifax.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Lillian was a devout Catholic with a great love for her faith. In her younger years, she enjoyed gardening, particularly roses, which drew admiration from many a passerby and was skilled in the crafts of rug hooking, crocheting and knitting. Lillian was kind and generous and had a whimsical sense of humour. She enjoyed a good game of crib and liked to play bingo, especially with her nieces “down home” in the Cove. Her greatest pride and joy were her children whom she loved dearly and she took special delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Ambrose; a son in infancy; daughter Mary; brothers, Reg and Bresnan; sisters, Eva (Art) Purcell and Olive (Ed) Tone.
She is survived by sons, Jim (Judy), Stellarton, Reg (Sharon), Westville; daughters, Anne (Michael) McAlpine, Halifax; Bernadette Dorrington, Truro; Cathy (Paul) MacDonald, New Glasgow; Rita (Colin) Mathieson, Halifax; grandchildren: Joanne (Rick) Cox, Ontario; Janice Rowe, Ontario; Karen (Kevin) Schwaiger, Calgary; Jim (Marissa) Martin, Yellowknife; Susan Martin, Stellarton; Perry (Nancy) Dorrington, Vancouver; Marc (Krista) Chisholm, New Hampshire; Chris (Nichole) MacDonald, Ontario; Beth (Rob) Grossman, Florida; Jonessa (Matthew) MacNeil, New Glasgow; Jennifer Mathieson, Calgary; Glenn Mathieson, Australia; great-grandchildren: Travis, Nicholas and Evan Cox; Nic and Breanna Rowe; Annalise and Jonathon Schwaiger; Teresa Martin; Alexander Grossman. Lillian is also survived by son-in-law, Bill Fraser, Ontario, and brother-in-law Frank (Winnie) Martin as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be at the R. H. Porter Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, December 28. Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 29 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in memory of Lillian to a charity of one’s choice or to Glen Haven Manor.
