Born March 22, 1916, in Port Hood, she was a daughter of the late Eben Oscar and Sadie (Ross) Leadbetter. Cora’s family moved to Truro in 1923 where she attended and completed her public schooling. In 1938, she graduated from Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing. She then nursed in Colchester County Hospital, with Victorian Order of Nurses and did private duty during the war years. In 1942, Cora married the love of her life, Flight Lieutenant John Mosher Calhoun. When her husband returned from the war they spent the next 40 years in Campbellton, New Brunswick. In 1998, following the death of her husband, Cora returned to Truro to live with her sister, Etta. Cora was a woman of many talents. She played the piano in various nursing homes in the Truro area, was a very keen duplicate bridge player, an avid golfer, was involved in Theatre New Brunswick, volunteered at blood donor clinics, had been a Regent of the I.O.D.E. Cora’s family is grateful to the staff of Cedarstone for their excellent care; to Colchester East Hants Regional Library for the many books enjoyed by Cora and to the many friends who visited and loved Cora. A special thank you to Reby for her loving care, to Harry whose music brightened Cora’s life, to the Camerons and their pet, Lucy for regular visits, Mary Jean and Jamie Muir and Helen Karagianis for their daily visits, the volunteers of Cedarstone for their devotion and her friends at Saint Andrew’s United Church. Honouring Cora’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held in Robie Street Cemetery at a later date.
