Joseph ‘Josie’ O’Brien, age 72 of Nolan’s Lane and originally from 3rd Street in the Hub, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, Josie was the son of the late Lawrence and Leona Catherine (O’Connell) O’Brien.
In his earlier years Josie worked in the coal mines and he also drove taxi in the Glace Bay area. Josie lived in Ontario for several years. He was a volunteer at the Savoy and a member of the Glace Bay Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club.
Josie loved to read and was always ready for a good conversation. He was keenly interested in politics and also had a great passion for music, as he himself was a singer. He enjoyed country music, The Three Tenors and Andre Bocelli. His door was always open to those in need.
Joseph is survived by two sons, Todd (Andrea), Jamie (Alice), Ontario; two daughters, Michelle ‘Shelly’ (Allen) White, Sherry (Ed) MacDonald, Glace Bay; 10 siblings, Mike (Brenda), Hector (Donna), Margie (Ron), Mary (Bob), Betty (Joe), all in Ontario, Ernie (Thersa), Phylliss (Wayne), Rita (Eddy), all in Glace Bay, Julie (John), Sydney and Rick in Alberta.
Josie will be loved and missed dearly by his eight grandchildren, Michael, Catherine, Teri Lynn, Sean, Kyle, Melissa, Tyler, Cecil and many nieces, nephews.
Josie was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Dorothy ‘Dot’ (Turner) O’Brien in the year 2000; stepfather, Roy Talbot and a brother, Frankie.
Cremation has taken place. The funeral service, officiated by Deacon Lorne MacNeil is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Josie, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia.
