JOHN FRANCIS WHELAN April 13, 1925 - March 8, 2008 With much sadness we regret to announce the passing of a beloved husband and dear father. Survived by his wife of 58 years Joan Elizabeth Whelan. Five children, Maureen (Schylore) Laird, Michael (Christine) Whelan, Anne (Baxter) Huston, John (Estelle) Whelan, David (Tina) Whelan. Eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Predeceased by brother Joe Whelan, twin sister Marie Whelan and Grandson Jason John Laird. Dad grew up on the family wheat farm just outside of Saskatoon. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 18 years old navigating bombers from 1943-45. After the war he studied engineering at the University of Saskatchewan then started with the PFRA building dams. During this time he met Joan in Kelowna where they married and started their family. Dad continued working on water systems with B.C. Fruitlands, private contractors and his own water contracting business until his retirement in 1990. In earlier years he was always active in the community with the North Kamloops Elks Lodge 469 charter member, Brocklehurst volunteer Fire Department, PTA and assisted the RCMP with recovery diving. His other interests included travelling the world, curling and spending time outdoors with his kids. If he wasn't reading and enjoying his cup of coffee he would be working on one of his wood projects. Dad always stuck by his family and we will always remember him for that. We Will Miss you Dad A remembrance will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 730 Cottonwood Avenue in the east entry lounge at 1:00 p.m. Thanks to Dr. Paul Yanko for his years of care. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation
