It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Sonja Ann Smith on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late John and Edna (Hillier) Serafinus.
She was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines.
Sonja was crossing guard for the Bras d’Or Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie Smith; daughters, Rhonda MacDonald, Shannon (Kevin) Wall and Denise (Darrell) Coakley; sons, Sam (Melissa) Clark, Troy (Shelly) Clark, Roy (Tammy) Clark; special sisters, Sherry (Emmett) O’Connor and Debbie (Steve) Serafinus; and her special friend, Sarah Ann Fahey. Also left to mourn are her 15 grandchildren, Melissa, Ryan, Amber MacDonald, Amy, Jeffrey and Samantha Harrietha, Chrissy Clark, Tyler, Cody, Jeremy Clark, MacKenzie and Deacon Clark, Aleah Clark, Kendra and Josh Donovan, Marley Forrest, and 10 special great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Bishop and Deanna (Bernie) Buffett; brothers Monte (Debbie) Serafinus and Roy (Bonnie) Serafinus; son-in-law, Gordon MacDonald; mother-in-law, Theresa Smith; brothers-in-law, Danny LeBlanc, Francis (Genesta) Smith, David (Betty) Smith, Bobby (Cathy) Smith, Jimmy (Karen) Smith and sisters-in-law, Margie Serafinus, Joan (Nick) Musbally, Brenda (Brian) Marsh.
Sonja is also survived by her stepfamilies, Sandra (David), Cathy, Angela and Davie Gouthro, Reggie, Paul and Troy Clark, Michael and Danny Smith and Kayla Finnigan.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Samuel Clark, sisters, Francie (Skooky) Targett and Lorraine LeBlanc, brother, Johnnie Serafinus.
The family would like to thank Susan MacKenzie, palliative care and the VON for the special care they provided to Mom over the last few months.
Visitation for Sonja Ann Smith will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Thursday), Dec. 31, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass celebrating her life will take place Saturday, 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. The burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonja’s memory may be made to the palliative care or the VON.
