MARY ATAMANCHUK July 17, 1920 ~ March 18, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary Atamanchuk (Nystoruk) of Kamloops, B.C. passed away on Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 at 87 years of age after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband John of 51 years on June 13th, 1988. Her children are Ann (Lloyd) Devlin of Kamloops, B.C., Nick (Lee) Atamanchuk of Nanoose Bay, B.C., Steve (Gabrielle) Atamanchuk of Victoria, B.C., and Sylvia (Don) Stark of Terrace, B.C. She had 21 grandchildren, and 50 great grandchildren. Her surviving brothers and sisters are Pearl Storey, George (Edith) Nystoruk, Anne Makichuk, Lena Bruner, Mike (Madeline) Nystoruk, Steven (Betty) Nystoruk, Martha (Jon) Romailler, Violet Hilash, Rose (Gordon) Laveay, and Carolyn White. She will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her mother and father John Nystoruk and Katherine Kosolowsky, daughter Leona (Louis) Dolbec, brothers Bill (Rose) Nystoruk, Eugene Nystoruk, sister Helen (Bill) Kalanchy, brothers-in-law, Gord Storey, Bill Makichuk, Verne Bruner, and Tom Hilash. Mary was born in Arran, Saskatchewan on July 17th, 1920. She married John Atamanchuk on her 17th birthday, in 1937. They moved to B.C. in 1939 and raised their five children in (North) Kamloops. They saw many changes in Kamloops in the last 64 years. Mary and John were founding members of their church and remained active throughout their lives. Mary was a very active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and was famous for her pyrogies and knitted slippers. She was lovingly known as grandma smiley to her many great grand children. Prayers will be held at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 109 Tranquille Road, Kamloops, B.C. at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 24th, 2008. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25th, 2008, Reverend Father Mykhaylo Bohun, officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, alongside her husband. Following the burial, a reception will be held at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church. Special Thanks to Dr. Hamilton, Dr. Michaud and the nurses who looked after our mother with such great care. Also thanks to Hospice for the wonderful, compassionate care and for the pastoral team that was always there. Mary has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in her memory.
