Hampton Lewis
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hampton Leon Lewis, aged 93 at Gables Lodge in Amherst, NS on June 15, 2012. Hamp will be greatly missed by his daughter, Jane (Garry) Stack, grandchildren, Gina (Trevor) McFetridge, Michael (Chastity) Stack and Robert Stack, great-grandchildren, Eric, Brady, Glenn and Lauren, and his dear friend Marie Doucette of Yarmouth. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Hector and Ellen (Purchase) Lewis. Hamp was predeceased by his wife Frances (Bird) of West Leicester and dear friend Isabel Vacon of Yarmouth. He was the last surviving sibling of 13 brothers and sisters, Frances Chapman, Gladys Lewis, Olive Jobe, Marion Lewis, Susie Brundage, Peggy Hatcher, David, Chester, James, Alvin, Arthur and Walter.
He served in the Second World War and was discharged as a corporal in 1946. He worked for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission followed by Canada Post, retiring in 1983. Hamp was a great athlete. He enjoyed boxing, bowling, golf, curling, baseball and his beloved Blue Jays. He was inducted into the Yarmouth Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Lions Bowling Team, which won 13 provincial championships.
Hamp was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 for more than 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Pythias and a former member of the Yarmouth Lions Club. He was also a member of Christ Church in Amherst and enjoyed singing with the Amherst Men’s Ecumenical Choir.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Furlong- Jones Funeral Home, Amherst. A service of remembrance will be held at Christ Church Amherst on Saturday, June 23 at 11 a.m. A reception for friends and family will take place at 10 a.m. in the parish hall, prior to the service.
