It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of John Leo Burke at the QEII, Halifax on Thursday, June 28, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Maxiner) Burke.
Employed in the fishing industry on many levels most of his life. His love for the community and people led him to be one of the founding members of the Louisbourg Lion’s Club and a member of the Louisbourg Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and later years an honorary member.
John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Muriel (Bagnell); his three children, Derrick (Gloria), Valerie Kennedy (Terry), Karen (John) Cann, all of Louisbourg; his precious grandchildren, Jim, D.J., Tara, and David, six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Mary, Brenda, Beverly, Debbie, Denise, Jim, Dan, Billy, Allen, Charles as well as many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, July 2, 2012 at Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial mass will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday July 3, 2012 at Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg, with Fr. Raj. officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
